Spending the whole weekend with Michael :)
Friday: went to dinner to meet him and all his friends @ Benihana’s.
Saturday: went to movies to see Star Trek Into Darkness. Had some gelato and free popcorn.
Today: he’s coming to our house to hang out and chill with me :) gonna eat dinner and dessert
“Mrs. Grant, you can still give me the name.” “NO!”
I took this as Mellie not wanting to be shut off from Fitz again. (Truth is that Fitz hasn’t had Mellie on his mind since he’s been on his endgame mission: Olivia Pope. But I digress…)
Mellie is fully aware of the consequences of giving her fixer the name. To me this mirrors Cyrus not wanting to use the Jake Ballard/Olivia Pope sex tape.
To me this mirrors Olivia giving Harrison those two folders. Cyrus and Mellie’s in it for themselves where Olivia’s in it for Fitz’s best interest and their relationship’s best interest. They’ll play that last card only when necessary.
Cyrus and Mellie both need Fitz as POTUS to achieve their personal ambition. If not he’s POTUS it messes with their endgame. (Just my two cents!)
Not only that but she is also terrified what her life would be like without Fitz. Not in a way that is romantic but in a way that she has pinned her dreams and hopes to him that she had no real life of her own. She has always been afraid to step into the arena herself. To fight the battles. To take the hits. Fitz took them for her. If she made a bad decision he always took the brunt of it. But without Fitz she is alone. She has to do it alone. She has to stand as her own woman and take the hits. For all of her talk she is the same woman who confessed to Olivia she had no idea what she was going to do if Fitz never woke from his coma. That she couldn’t imagine life without him.
She’s not ready to do that. So she hold on to the one piece that won’t let him completely walk out the door.
^ Exactly. Mellie will no longer be able to pretend which is something she has known her whole life. But when she has to face the world alone she cannot pretend, she has to face reality.
And she has probably been trained for most of her life that she was to attach herself with a man of power and potential. That her purpose in the world was to be the First Lady and to give this man, when he came, children. So even before she even met Fitz she had an idea of him and doing everything in her power to make this man great. To live her ambitions for him. And that he would be worthy of it.
Fitz was not what she expected. Not as driven, not as polished, not as ambitious. But he was all she had so she sunk her fingers into it and devoted herself to getting to the WH. Even before she met him she built her life around him and now he wants to leave.
She is afraid to be on her own.
Mellie has been groomed like Fitz from birth (hear me out) for one sole mission - being the perfect married politician wife. (Fitz has work HARD to be everything his father Big Jerry wasn’t.) With Mellie, that grooming was all she ever knows.
She came from old money, went to the perfect schools, graduated on top of her class from the perfect schools and waited for the perfect politician husband candidate to come her way. (And she married Big Jerry’s son, Fitz.) She had Fitz’s kids and gave up her legal career to get closer to her personal political ambition.
It’s worth mentioning how Abby (a former politician wife) broke free from it to become a gladiator in a suit..thanks to Olivia Pope. I mean look at Abby. Abby realizes pretending is NOT real. (Abby still carries a chip on her shoulder for arranged/fixed marriage.) Olivia saw something in Abby and made her a OPA. Abby has a life whereas with Mellie her whole life was built upon being FLOTUS. (With that, bring on Abby Whelan’s back story!)
Fitz made a point of mentioning on how Mellie couldn’t wait to decorate the WH when they were on the campaign trail. It’s worth mentioning that Fitz also knew pretending is not real long before Olivia Pope came into his life but she was the catalyst of this idea.
It’s worth mentioning how Mellie admitted to Olivia her fears - how to go on without Fitz. Like you said it best - Mellie is afraid to be on her own. I can’t blame her because she was groom to be who she is. (Just my two cents on this!)
